“A Little Christmas Nog” CD release party with The Three Ds
Sunday, December 10th, 3:00 pm
Doors open at 2:30, music at 3:00, and refreshments will be served
PGS Member Mike Doolin writes:
I’m hosting my own house concert this time, and it’s a CD release party for a new Christmas CD! “A Little Christmas Nog” is 15 tracks of holiday music, some familiar, some not so familiar. I recorded it with John and Jessica Dover (we call ourselves The Three Ds - Doolin, Dover and Dover) here at the House of Doolescu. John is a fantastic trumpet player who I’ve been playing with for years; his wife Jessica is a lovely singer; the two of them are dear friends of mine. Come share the joy of the holidays with us, have a cup of Christmas cheer, and enjoy our quirky and eclectic take on the music of the season.
We ask a suggested donation of $15. Of course, CDs will be available for purchase :)
Please RSVP to [email protected] to reserve seats, and I will reply with the address. Even if you already know where we are, please RSVP so I know how many chairs to set up :)

Portland Folkmusic Society presents
Sprygg
Friday Nov. 17, 7:30pm
Colonial Heights Presbyterian
Sprygg is a gathering of musicians from all over the world who happen to have come together in Portland. The result will be an evening of Irish jigs, Appalachian murder ballads, Yiddish cabaret music and a few New Zealand original works. If you find that enticing you might also feel yourself moving to a Balkan dance tune. All of these songs come together as the Sprygg quartet pulls their audience from Eastern Europe to the cafes of 1930s Paris and then down into the dark hollows of the Appalachians. The musicians of Sprygg accomplish these musical feats by bringing their individual worlds of experience and musical ability together into a blend of energy and empathy for the subjects of their songs and to the joy of the audience.

PDX Jazz presents:
HUDSON
Jack DeJohnette, John Scofield, Larry Grenadier & John Medeski
Monday October 23 | 7:30 pm
Newmark Theatre
Tickets & Information
Drummer Jack DeJohnette, guitarist John Scofield, bassist Larry Grenadier and keyboardist John Medeski all live in the Hudson River Valley, which stretches south from the New York state capital of Albany to the tip of Manhattan. The region’s towns are nestled amid the forests of the Catskill Mountains, with artists in residence because New York City is near, by train or car. Proximity may make it easy for these four to rehearse—but if so, look out!—because DeJohnette, in his prime lays fierce rhythms down. Tested as DeJohnette was in the bands of Miles Davis, Scofield revels in melodic tension and bluesy release. Medeski, even without his longstanding trio partners Billy Martin and Chris Wood, is impassioned on electric organ, piano and synths. This all sets Grenadier at the centre of a maelstrom he anchors with aplomb. As Hudson, the four are jazz-rock-fusion experts, eager and able to create instrumental music with a thrilling edge.

Fine Company & Three Together
Friday, Oct. 20th, 7:30pm
The Portland Folk Society October concert presents a “double-triple”: two power-house trios bringing songs and stories ranging from old timey to modern popular music.
Fine Company is the lead-off group. These Smithsonian-Folkways recording artists, Bill Murlin, Jim Portillo and Ron Dalton on guitar, banjo and bass, keep that old timey feel with rich vocal harmonies that extend into their new compositions. Bill is a long time PFS member, having served on the board, the Singtime Frolics and Concert Committees. He recently played a major part in the Smithsonian Folkways presentation of Roll Columbia, a new album of Woody Guthrie's Columbia River songs.
Three Together is the second part of this exciting double bill. Originally formed in 1997, the group consists of Doug Smith, Don Mitchell and Judy Koch Smith. They blend their voices and instruments for an evening of folk, pop and soft rock with an emphasis on harmonious FUN! They won the Peoples's Choice Award at the 2011 Florence Winter Folk Festival at the Oregon coast. They also were awarded the Lions prestigious Melvin Jones Fellow award in 2009 for outstanding service to non-profits throughout the Northwest by performing concerts for many worthy causes.

Sunday September 24th, 7:00pm

PGS Member Anton Emery writes:
Hi fellow Portland Guitar Society members. Great show coming up this Sunday... Two of my favorite guitarists, Steve Baughman and Eric Skye are playing a joint show at the Little Church this Sunday the 24th at 7pm. It is on 23rd and Sumner, right off Alberta. Suggested donation is $15-20. If you enjoy fine guitar music you won't want to miss this. They will each play their own set and perhaps a tune or two together.
Eric Skye is a superb Portland acoustic guitarist, with national reputation as well. He plays killer arrangements of jazz, blues, and bluegrass music as well as his own wonderful compositions, and is equally adept fingerpicking or with a flatpick.
Steve is one of the finest celtic guitar and clawhammer banjo players that I know. His playing is by turns playful, complex, wonderfully sweet and simple — in every way a delight to the ear.
Hope to see you there.

He has been part of a number of groundbreaking bands in traditional music, including Touchstone (with Triona Ni Dhomnaill), The Red Clay Ramblers, The Clayfoot Strutters and The Sevens. His flute playing also features prominently in the soundtrack to John Sayles’s film The Secret of Roan Inish. Aside from his CDs with Dan, Mark can be heard on a host of recordings by the above-mentioned bands.
Dan is well known in the Northwest folk music scene as a multi-instrumentalist and singer. Trained as a classical guitarist, Dan started playing Irish fiddle in music school to lighten things up. PDX Jazz presents
Anat Cohen with Trio Brasileiro
Thursday May 4, 7:30pm
The Old Church, 1422 SW 11th Ave
Israeli-born clarinetist and saxophonist Anat Cohen has been the winner of nine consecutive Jazz Journalist Association awards for Clarinetist of the Year, multiple DownBeat Critics and Readers Polls, and a wealth of other accolades. An established bandleader and prolific composer, Cohen’s music is a unique blend of modern and traditional jazz, classical music, Brazilian choro, Argentine tango, and an expansive timeline of Afro-Cuban styles. Anat has toured the world with her quartet, headlining at the Newport, Umbria, SF Jazz and North Sea jazz festivals. Over the past couple of years, Cohen has become a hit with Portland jazz fanatics, and for this appearance she will be collaborating with Trio Brasileiro in what promises to be an amalgamation of jazz and the traditional choro music of Brazil.
“What’s not to love about a young clarinetist and saxophonist who plays everything we love—modern jazz, world music, “hot” New Orleans style jazz—and does it all brilliantly?” – The Wall Street Journal
www.anatcohen.com
Formed in 2011, Trio Brasileiro has already made a name for itself as an ensemble worthy of international attention. Their stunning virtuosity is matched with remarkable musicianship and a deep devotion to the language of music, allowing them to achieve a one-of-a-kind sound that shares equal parts understated subtlety and irresistible groove. But it is their love of the traditional music of Brazil and the connection between brothers – by birth and by bonds of friendship – that create a very rare and profound beauty.
Trio Brasileiro is dedicated to performing the great traditional choro music of Brasil including their own compositions, which are modern reflections of that great traditional musical form. Dudu, Douglas and Alexandre live in Brazil and have been touring as a trio in the U.S. with overwhelming success, with sold out performances and standing ovations all along the country.
