History
Back in the 1970s, a group of local classical guitarists began meeting under the name "Portland Classical Guitar Society" to provide a regular opportunity for discussion and informal performance. Their organization was granted nonprofit status in 1978.
Much of the membership came from local universities, including Lewis & Clark and Portland State. In the early 1980s, as many of the main participants graduated from college or moved on, the society gradually became dormant. One devoted supporter maintained the group's nonprofit status, hoping for a future renewal of interest.

New Life
In the summer of 1987, a few who missed the activities of the society met with the express goal of recreating an active organization. This group included prominent local instructors, instrument makers, and performers with a broad range of musical interests, and they wanted to encourage this diversity in their the new organization -- the Portland Guitar Society.
And Now
The Portland Guitar Society (PGS) preserves its open support for guitar music of all forms. Classical guitarists are well represented, but so are exponents of the full range of popular styles. At any meeting, expect to hear classical, jazz, blues, flamenco, fingerstyle, Nashville picking, ensembles, vocal accompaniment, and much more.
Every skill level is welcomed. During the open mic session, you may see someone performing for the first time before an audience, followed by a professional recording artist. In all cases, the performers receive applause and praise for taking part in the evening.
You will see all ages as well...from grade schoolers to those well beyond retirement. And, you don't even have to be a performer to enjoy the Portland Guitar Society -- we have plenty of room for listeners.
