Pierre Bensusan
Masterclass
March 16, 7pm
Multi award-winning finger style guitarist Pierre Bensusan is currently performing his 2016 World Tour and plays the Alberta Rose Theater on Tuesday March 15.
The next evening, March 16, Pierre is offering a masterclass in northeast Portland to a maximum of 25 guitar students. The three-hour class begins at 7 pm in the home of John Silliman Dodge. Cost is $50. Please RSVP for the class by March 12 and send any questions to [email protected] Pierre Bensusan's workshops are open to any guitarist, from every musical horizon, who has already attained a competent technical level. He addresses issues of musicianship, philosophy of music, approach to the guitar, lots of techniques, ear training and so forth. All together, it's about "Music for Guitar" in Fingerstyle, whatever the tuning is. Pierre’s classes are based on a large concept which is that, whatever the style, and whether you'd like to focus on interpreting, improvising or composing, we need to fulfill the process of playing to express music on the instrument. This is analyzed and optimized throughout the length of the class by going deep into various right hand and left hand techniques, body position, exercises, ornamentations, rhythmic attention, tone, expression, interpretation and so forth. Pierre plays in DADGAD tuning but while the seminar is not about DADGAD per se, Pierre will share his experience of this tuning. http://www.pierrebensusan.com |
Lyrical Strings Duo Join the Lyrical Strings Duo (Lucie Zálešáková, violin & Stephen Osserman, classical guitar) in celebrating the release of their latest album: On An Overgrown Path.
Both concerts will feature works from the album alongside some of the duo's brand new arrangements and old favorites. About the Album: In their second album, On an Overgrown Path, the Lyrical Strings Duo visits the melodies and folklore of Central and Eastern Europe. Lucie’s childhood home in Prague was filled with the music of Leoš Janáček, her mother’s favorite composer. Janáček's piano collection On An Overgrown Path, in particular, was frequently heard on the phonograph. Taking this work as their starting point, the duo explores a fascinating repertoire of pieces at the intersection of folk traditions, romanticism, and storytelling from Bohemia, Moravia, Poland and Ukraine. Since its release, the album was selected as the “Delight of the Week” by the Music Director of a National Public Radio affiliate in Maryland, has earned the praise of leading music scholars, and has been played on classical radio stations throughout the United States and Canada. “Some of the greatest composers wrote the most beautiful miniatures. This album takes several of the most gorgeous small scale piano, vocal and chamber pieces by Janacek, Martinu, Wieniawski and Lysenko and arranges them for shimmering guitar and a violin aspiring to the power of speech. The result is both visionary and delightful. Those who know these pieces will be excited to hear them in their new musical garb, and those who do not, are in for the biggest treat.” – Michael Beckerman, Professor of Music, New York University; Recipient of Janáček Medal from Czech Ministry of Culture; Laureate of the Czech Music Council. |

On an Overgrown Path
Dreamscapes, Dances and Love Stories of the European Borderlands Thursday, April 30th at 8 pm Alberta Rose Theater 3000 NE Alberta St, Portland, OR $25 General / $12 student, senior or low-income To purchase tickets, click here or call 503-764-4131 Moravia has been called the intersection of Eastern and Western European music. The convergence of these disparate elements, throughout the Europeans Borderlands at the turn of the last century, created a rich musical tradition that was cut off by politics and war for generations. A collaboration between classical musicians, folk musicians and modern dancers, On an Overgrown Path revives these cultural treasures in new arrangements and settings. The program is inspired by Leoš Janáček’s work of the same name, which draws on the folklore of his native Moravia and his own personal stories. The Lyrical Strings Duo will perform his works alongside those of his romantic era predecessors and the vibrant folk and Gypsy-inspired works of his contemporaries and successors. The composers on the program include Antonín Dvořák, Frédéric Chopin, Henryk Wieniawski, Mykola Lysenko, Jeno Hubay, and Bohuslav Martinů. |

John says: "Folk-rock-jazz-blues-classical-world music. Seriously, that’s my answer to the question, “What kind of music do you play?” Considering the dozen different states I’ve called home, it’s not surprising that my styles range almost as widely as my travels. But rather than try to put a label on the sound—because everybody has a different one, like Americana/roots/urban folk pop/indie acoustic—I just go for three qualities in my music: it’s rhythmic, melodic and memorable."

Portland Classic Guitar
18605 Willamette Drive,
West Linn, OR 97068
The child of Chilean father, popular guitarist and Danish mother, classical pianist, Marcelo de la Puebla received the legacy of two cultures that have made him who he is. His childhood was rocked by Danish Lutheran hymns and popular songs in Chile.
In order to complete his training, he moved to France and he became the disciple of Alberto Ponce: the most important student of Emilio Pujol, who was in turn-of Francisco Tarrega. Marcelo de la Puebla included himself in that way in the great historical Spanich school of classical guitar.
After a few exciting years of study, Mr de la Puebla was awarded the first prize unanimously at the Regional National Conservatory of Aubervilliers and the Higher Diploma of the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris "Alfred Cortot". He then received a honor prize at the International Guitar Competition Tredrez- Locquemeau.
Since then, Marcelo de la Puebla has become a concert nomad who travels the world with his guitar, giving a testimony of life and emotions in the service of struggles and hopes of mankind. He has performed in Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, France, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Switzerland, Spain, Algeria and Morocco. He has also given master classes in Europe, Latin America and North Africa, where he tries to convey the same passion he received from his teachers.

PGS Meeting:
Featured Performer: Randal Bays
It's unusual for someone to be really brilliant on two very different instruments, but Bays is nearly as well-known for his fingerstyle guitar as for his fiddling. The music world first heard his guitar work on two seminal albums with Irish fiddler Martin Hayes, and a few years later he contributed two stunning tracks to a collection called “Masters of the Irish Guitar” on Shanachie Records. Many people encouraged Randal to record a solo guitar album, which he finally did, releasing “Oyster Light” in 2010 to the delight of guitar lovers around the world. Famed Irish guitarist Daithi Sproule had this to say about it... "Randal's apparently effortless command of the guitar, profound knowledge of the music, and impeccable taste and flair form, in my opinion, a combination unequalled in the field of Irish/Celtic music.” |
