Faces of the Guitar celebrates Portland Guitar Society's thirty years of service to the Portland community.
This four-act show features an eclectic mix of notable Portland musicians who will transport the audience from Middle Eastern fusion to Bach, Bluegrass, Swing, and the Blues. With performances by: Norman Sylvester Band, featuring Leanne Sylvester-Miller (Blues) Eric Skye & Tim Connell (Bluegrass & Jazz influences) Travis Johnson (Classical Guitar) Al Andalus, Julia & Tarik Banzi (Middle Eastern & Flamenco influences) The award-winning Al Andalus Ensemble, oud player Tarik Banzi and flamenco guitarist Julia Banzi, have created an original musical language from their life experiences largely in North Africa and Spain. Their music is a song of passion, possibility, and peace, while representing a confluence of ancient and contemporary voices, both East and West. http://www.andalus.com Gifted young classical guitarist Travis Johnson returns to Portland after completing his master's in classical guitar performance at University of Texas In Austin. At age twelve Travis won first place in the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America's International Youth Competition. A Davidson Fellow, Travis has had numerous appearances on radio and television including nationally syndicated From the Top, where he made his Carnegie Hall debut at age 15. http://www.facebook.com/Travis.guitar The duo of Eric Skye on guitar and Tim Connell on mandolin, both with award-winning solo careers, have collaborated to create an engaging, lively mix of old fiddle tunes recorded on their recent CD June Apple. In performance they display a joyful synergy -- part jazz, part bluegrass, and always inspiring. http://ericskye.com http://www.timconnellmusic.com Soulful Blues icon Norman Sylvester and his band wrap up the evening.
